Local SEO for clinics: what actually moves the needle

Cut through the SEO noise. Here is what actually matters for clinic visibility in local search results in India.

If you have ever spoken to a digital marketing agency, you have probably heard the term "SEO" thrown around a lot. Most of what they tell you is either outdated, irrelevant for doctors, or so generic that it is useless.

Here is what actually works for clinics in India. No jargon, just practical steps.

First, understand what "local SEO" means

When someone searches "ENT specialist in Bandra," Google does not show results from all over the internet. It shows local results: nearby clinics, map listings, and websites that are clearly about Bandra or nearby areas. Local SEO is the art of making sure your clinic shows up in these location specific searches.

This is different from regular SEO. You are not competing with WebMD or Healthline. You are competing with the 5 to 15 other ENT specialists in your locality. That is a much more winnable game.

The 3 things that matter most

1. Your Google Business Profile

We have said this before and we will say it again. Your GBP is responsible for roughly 50% of your local search ranking. If you have not read our complete GBP guide, start there. Everything else builds on top of it.

2. Reviews (quantity, quality, and recency)

Reviews account for about 15 to 20% of your local ranking. Google's algorithm specifically looks at:

  • Total number of reviews
  • Average star rating
  • How recently you received reviews
  • Whether you respond to reviews
  • Whether reviews mention specific services (e.g., "great root canal experience")

A steady flow of 3 to 5 new reviews per month is better than getting 50 reviews in one week and then nothing for 6 months. Google values consistency.

3. Your website

Your website accounts for about 20 to 25% of your local ranking. The key factors:

  • Location pages: A page clearly mentioning your city and locality with your services
  • Mobile speed: Must load in under 3 seconds on a phone
  • NAP consistency: Your Name, Address, and Phone number must match exactly across your website, GBP, and all directories
  • Content: Pages about each service you offer, written for patients (not search engines)

What does NOT matter (despite what agencies tell you)

  • Meta keywords: Google has not used meta keywords for over 15 years. If an agency mentions this, run.
  • Submitting to 500 directories: Most of those directories are spam. Focus on the ones that matter: Google, Practo, Justdial, Lybrate, and your state medical council listing.
  • Buying backlinks: Paid links can actually get your site penalised by Google.
  • Posting on social media for SEO: Social media posts do not directly improve your Google ranking. They might help with awareness, but they are not an SEO strategy.

A simple monthly SEO routine

You do not need to spend hours on this. Here is a realistic routine that takes about 2 to 3 hours per month:

Weekly (15 minutes each)

  • Post one update on your Google Business Profile
  • Respond to any new reviews
  • Share your Google review link with 5 recent patients via WhatsApp

Monthly (1 hour)

  • Add 2 to 3 new photos to your GBP
  • Write one short blog post or FAQ answer for your website (300 to 500 words on a question patients commonly ask you)
  • Check that your info is still correct on Practo, Justdial, and Google

How to measure if it is working

Google Business Profile has built in analytics (called "Insights" or "Performance" depending on when you look). Track these numbers monthly:

  • Search queries: What terms are people using to find you?
  • Profile views: How many people see your listing?
  • Direction requests: How many people ask Google Maps for directions to your clinic?
  • Phone calls: How many people tap the call button?
  • Website clicks: How many people visit your website from your listing?

If these numbers are going up month over month, your local SEO is working. If they are flat or declining, something needs to change.
